Warrick Sheriff: Phone cable theft suspect arrested | Crime
A Boonville man has been arrested, but the investigation into ongoing thefts of telephone cable in Warrick and Spencer Counties continues.
Dean W. Bannister, 42, was taken into custody and is in the Spencer County Jail. He's also facing charges of theft in Warrick County.
Warrick and Spencer County law enforcement officers worked a joint investigation into 13 separate thefts of telephone cable along rural county roads that began toward the end of September and continued into this week. They say Bannister was using climbing spikes to get up utility poles and used a hacksaw to cut through the thick wires.
Deputies say Bannister cut the cables late at night in rural areas where he wouldn't be seen.
According to AT&T officials the thefts have already cost the company more than $30,000 in lost materials and wages. Some of the repair bills have not been totaled.
After the lines were cut and taken, there were several hundred residents in both counties without telephone service including their 911 emergency telephone service. There were also two different dates when a school and a financial institution were without telephone service.
The investigation is continuing and more arrests could be possible upon completion.
