Boonville native among St. Mary's winners

 

A Boonville woman is among the 2013 Excellence in Nursing Award winners at St. Mary's Medical Center.

Melanie Lutz is the “Nurses and the Community Award” winner, recognized for her success in improving patient outcomes by developing strong partnerships with community organizations. Lutz is a member of the Emergency Department Practice Council and Safe Kids, among others. She has worked in the St. Mary’s Emergency Department since 2006. Lutz received her bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Evansville and her associate degree in nursing from Ivy Tech Community College.

The Women’s Hospital invites anyone planning to start a family, expecting a child, or raising a baby to attend the 6th annual Babypalooza event on Saturday, May 11, from 9am until noon in the parking lot of The Women’s Hospital.

Attendees at the event will be among the first to see the proposed design for remodeled patient rooms at The Women’s Hospital. They can also tour the labor and delivery areas of the hospital, learn the latest safety recommendations from local experts, and see what new and innovative products exist to help new parents. TRI-CAP receives nearly $100,000 from Komen for the Cure

 

The Evansville Tri-State Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded nineteen grants today totaling $516,810.  Among the recipients was the Dubois-Pike-Warrick Economic Opportunity Committee, Inc.’s “TRI-CAP Breast Cancer Program” which received-$99,480.  The purpose of the program is to help with treatment costs, educate and do extensive case management with underserved, underinsured and/or uninsured area women and men who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Instructor Debra Bieber says she loves making a difference in people's lives and wants to give everyone the chance to try out the cardio dance workout.

War veterans are not the only ones who may experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. According to the Mayo Clinic, many people who go through traumatic events have difficulty adjusting and coping for a short period of time. However, if flashbacks, sleep disturbances, and frightening thoughts last for more than a couple of months, you may be suffering from PTSD.

The Ohio Township Central Library and H.E.L.P. (Healthcare Education Learning Partners) are collaborating for a Lunch & Learn program to help explain the symptoms and treatments for PTSD. This free lunch and informational session takes place on Wednesday, April 10 at 12:00 p.m. in the Diamond Room at the Ohio Township Central Library in Newburgh.

Unsteady on your feet?  Get a free balance screening

Falls are the leading cause of injuries and trauma-related hospital admissions among the older population. A decreased sense of balance is a common risk factor for falling. In order to help prevent these types of injuries, St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital will offer free balance screenings on Thursday, April 4 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital Rehabilitation Department.

Hope Central and MDwise are hosting a Community Resource Fair on Monday, April 1 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hope Central, 304 N 2nd Street, Boonville.

This event will offer an opportunity to learn about the various services being offered in the community.

A representative will be on hand to enroll individuals in the Hoosier Healthwise or the Healthy Indiana Program.
