Warrick Co. gives hope with Relay for Life

WARRICK CO., IN (WFIE)- More than 300 people walked in this year's Warrick County Relay For Life at Castle High School.

39 teams were there, but the event was moved inside because of the threat of rain on Friday night.

Relay raised $88,000 last year, and the goal this year was $ 92,000.

An event called 10-10-10 started at 10:00 Friday night. Students from all three high schools stopped in to donate $10 to walk for 10 minutes.

Teams, like Alcoa, were there for the overnight activities.

Local officers trained by first-responders to Boston Marathon

NEWBURGH, IN (WFIE)- Authorities are back from some active shooter training in New England and you could say their teachers have experience.

They were there when the bombs went off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Police Chief Brett Sprinkle, and Sgt. Eric Mitchell are both from Newburgh and the two learned a lot while they were in New Hampshire from some of the best in the business. Now, they want to pass their knowledge onto the community.

Warrick County Council votes down wheel surtax

The Warrick County Council voted down raising the wheel surtax at their meeting Thursday night.

We learned the proposal would cost taxpayers about $10 to $25 dollars when they register their vehicles.

In addition to raising revenue, reviving the surtax would make Warrick County eligible for a much-needed 10 year interest-free loan that could be used for road repairs.

NEWBURGH, IN (WFIE)- Commissioners will discuss increasing the wheel surtax in Warrick County.

What does this mean for taxpayers?

"That money would come in and help us with roads and sidewalks and fixing our streets," says Lori Buehlman, Newburgh Town Manager.

Buehlman says the town needs as much road repair funding as it can get.

"Property tax caps back in 2008 and has limited dollars coming into small towns," says Buehlman. "We always have a list of streets that need attention."

State approves magistrate position in Warrick County

 

Warrick County is getting a magistrate, thanks to passage of new legislation.

Warrick County Publishing reports that the bill allows the three county judges to jointly appoint a magistrate to help with certain cases.

A magistrate has essentially the same duties as a judge, but in some cases, the judge would need to approve some actions performed by the magistrate.

Local pharmacies refuse to put Plan B One-Step on store shelves

WARRICK CO., IN (WFIE)- A new FDA ruling means that Plan B One-Step will now be sitting on store shelves at places like Walgreens, CVS and Target. It will be next to things like pregnancy tests in the family planning aisle.

As long as a woman has an ID to verify that she is 15 years or older she can pick it up and head straight for the cash register, completely by passing the pharmacist.
