Easter Seals 'LemondAid Stand' fundraiser features food

Grab a cup of lemonade this Friday and help out a good cause.  The 18th annual “LemonAid Stand for Easter Seals” will be held June 21 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, 3701 Bellemeade Ave.

Thirteen-year-old Owen George is coordinating this year’s event, with assistance from his parents, Art and Mindy George, and sister, Alex.  All funds raised will be donated to the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center to provide physical, occupational and speech therapy for local children and adults with disabilities.

Representative Larry Bucshon (R-IN) joined over 40 Vietnam and Desert Storm Veterans and their families Saturday at Lynnville Park to honor Sarah Paul, a veteran counselor at the Veteran Center in Evansville.

Bucshon presented Sarah with a plaque honoring her commitment to helping those who have served in combat.  During her time at the Vet Center, she has spent countless hours helping veterans and their families cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Chandler Elementary students say farewell to beloved teachers

Chandler Elementary students had an emotional surprise for their teachers this morning. 

During a morning assembly on the last day of school, students surprised three retiring teachers with flowers and messages of their appreciation.

Third grade teacher Lou Ann Fisher, fifth grade teacher Connie Warren and music teacher April Davidson are all retiring. All three women have more than 34 years of experience each.

A Boonville woman is among the 2013 Excellence in Nursing Award winners at St. Mary's Medical Center.

Melanie Lutz is the “Nurses and the Community Award” winner, recognized for her success in improving patient outcomes by developing strong partnerships with community organizations. Lutz is a member of the Emergency Department Practice Council and Safe Kids, among others. She has worked in the St. Mary’s Emergency Department since 2006. Lutz received her bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Evansville and her associate degree in nursing from Ivy Tech Community College.

Steven Byers named Firefighter of the Year

Steven Byers named Firefighter of the Year

 

American Legion Post 200 in Boonville has named Steven Byers as the Firefighter of the Year.

Our media partner, Warrick Publishing reports Byers spent five years as a volunteer before being hired full time in 2007.  He was promoted to assistant chief last year.  He is currently a fire/arson investigator, fire prevention officer and a member of the dive/rescue team.

Byers’ grandfather was a fireman and his father Steve is Boonville’s current fire chief.

Star treatment:  Castle North 8th grader wins Inventor and Innovator Science competition

Castle North 8th grader Arjun Dhawan has won the national grand prize at the Inventor and Innovator Science Competition for creating a cane with sensors to help those with vision problems.

Arjun received the prestigious award on May 3 at El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, California in a national competition sponsored by the Discovery Science Center, Broadcom Foundation, and Marvel Studios, along with Visa Signature and the famous El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.
