IHSAA:  Castle, Boonville football enrollments increase

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced enrollment totals that will determine the class in which each member school participates in various sports.

Castle’s enrollment for next year for football is 1,920, making it the 35th largest school in the state, up from 38th this year, and the largest in southeastern Indiana south of Terre Haute.   The IHSAA is adding a sixth class for football next season, but Castle’s enrollment isn’t enough to move the school out of 5A.

Boonville’s enrollment is 935, 111th largest in the state, up from 117th this year.

Tecumseh’s enrollment is 259 students.

Career & Technical Center students  advance to state competition

Thirty students who attend the EVSC’s Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center (SICTC) qualified for the SkillsUSA State Competition after qualifying at the regional competition at Vincennes University earlier this month. The state competition will take place April 12 and 13 in Indianapolis.

SICTC is comprised of more than 700 students from the southern half of Spencer County and all of Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick counties.  Students receive half-day classroom and hands-on training in 18 diverse areas of study using the latest emerging technologies and equipment, while still attending their home school.

Dollars for Scholars hopes to help Castle kids pay for college

Reaching the mark of 1,000 scholarships for Castle students is the goal of the 2013 push by the Castle High School Dollars for Scholars organization.

“Because of our community’s generosity, Castle High School Dollars for Scholars has distributed more than $375,000 to help students achieve dreams of a higher education,” said president Bob Boxell.

During the past seventeen years, Castle’s Dollars for Scholars organization has provided 920 scholarships for graduating seniors who are pursuing post-secondary education. According to Boxell, the 2012 push helped 81 Castle graduating seniors.

Inspirational swimmer Noah James named Indiana Spirit of Sport Award winner

Double lung transplant patient Noah James of Boonville High School, has been nominated by the Indiana High School Athletic Association for the National High School Spirit of Sport Award, an honor sponsored annually by the Indianapolis-based National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

The award seeks to recognize those individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive spirit of sport that represent the core mission of education-based athletics. James’ ability to overcome both the challenges of Asperger Syndrome and a life-threatening lung disease was chosen from 19 nominations from around the state.

A swimmer at BHS, Noah will be entered into regional competition with those nominees being considered for the national award by the NFHS. The overall national winner will be recognized at the NFHS Summer Meetings in Denver, CO in June.

Parents of Castle HS juniors invited to info meeting

Parents of juniors are invited to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 30th at 7:00 P.M. in the auditorium at Castle High School. The following topics will be discussed:

  • Things to know about the senior year
  • SAT andACT testing
  • The college and scholarship application process.

All parents of junior students are invited to attend.

Teen Power Talent Show returns next week

Teen Power Talent Show returns next week

A fixture for the past 12 years, the Castle High School Teen Power Talent Show to benefit the Warrick Humane Society will be held Wednesday, January 9 at 6:30 P.M. in the CHS auditorium.

Adult tickets are $10 and Student tickets are $5.

Celebrity judges will be awarding the winners.
