Alcoa Warrick Operations announced today that three Tri-State students have been named winners of Alcoa Foundation scholarships, providing merit-based assistance during their upcoming college careers.

The award is part of Alcoa Foundation’s Sons and Daughters Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement by graduating high school seniors whose parents are employed by Alcoa. The students received the scholarships based on academic achievement and potential, leadership ability, volunteerism and community service, and character. Needy students' families can register for free physicals, shots, dental screenings

For children to get the most out of their education they need to be as healthy as possible – and getting immunized is one of the best ways to keep kids from getting sick. But for families who lack quality health insurance, finances can be an obstacle. The EVSC School-Community council, in collaboration with several other groups will sponsor free school and sports physicals, immunizations, and dental screenings for Kindergarten, 6th, and 9th grade students who are residents of Vanderburgh, Warrick, or Posey Counties and are without insurance or have insurance that doesn’t cover these services.

The Back to School Blitz is scheduled for Saturday, August 4th from 9:00am – 1:00pm at ECHO Community Health Care’s Main Campus clinic, located at 315 Mulberry Street in Evansville.

Reitz, Alcoa Team up for student success

Picture the scene: A woman stands before a roomful of professional engineers explaining to them how to fix a problem they have had at their company. She tells them about hydrogen fluoride gas emissions with one design, and how special wire brushes on the framework will help; she paints a mental picture of door options with her words -- a track system; a folding type chest door; and a removable door that also will fold upward with a window that can withstand 1400 degrees and have zero thermal expansion; with an elbow catch latch.

ValerieMcKinney is not an engineer - although she has the terminology and the research on this project down cold and held the attention of everyone in the room. McKinney is a senior in a Project Lead the Way engineering classroom at Reitz High School and her "door" was the one selected by professionals at ALCOA as a possible solution to problems they had on the smelting pots at the plant - costing additional dollars each year due to damage of a door that has to be removed to look inside.

'Active learning' during last day of school

'Active learning' during last day of school

It's part 'Amazing Race' and part learning experience. Bright sunshine greeted the final day of school in Elberfeld and it was time to hit the streets!

Groups of K-3 students have a team leader that takes them to different stops within the city limits.   They have to perform a task before they go to the next stop. They also learn about the history of the city and what some of the older buildings were used for at different times.

It's a day long event day event that involves the entire community.

Teacher Joellen Harris put the event together.
