Castle hockey team moves on to title game

Castle's hockey team will play for the high school city championship at the Ford Center Sunday. Castle beat North Wednesday night in the semi-finals 4-3.

Drew James, Ryan Arseneaux, Jonathon Grimm and Ryan Harris scored for Castle.  Seth Hopkinson, the goalie for Castle, saved 11 of 14 shots.

All three North goals were scored by Braden Van Allen.

The championship game will pit Castle against Memorial, which beat Harrison 8-1.  The title game will take place at the Ford Center Sunday after the Icemen game.

Lawyers will speak about Lincoln in area classrooms

The Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) will sponsor “Why Lincoln Was a Lawyer,” a statewide community outreach program that matches lawyers with local schools on Friday, Feb. 10. The program is an opportunity for attorneys to speak in classrooms about Lincoln’s life, career and the impact he made on this nation.

“I believe we can all learn more from Lincoln the lawyer – and Lincoln the president,” said ISBA President C. Erik Chickedantz. “In homage to his life traveling a city-to-city circuit providing legal help, the Indiana State Bar is proud to lead this program.”

The following lawyers will be participating at a school near you on Friday, Feb. 10:

Newburgh Christian School open house

Newburgh Christian School invites the community to an Open House on Thursday February 16 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The 2012-2013 School year enrollment for all classes will begin at Open House.

During Open House new students will be able to enroll for the same cost as returning students. This substantial savings will only be available at the Open House. Plus, the school is currently at capacity in some classes and expects to experience the same next year, so families are encouraged to take advantage of this first opportunity to enroll.

State Rep. Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville) recently hosted a local student as a page at the Statehouse. Jacob Whitacre from Boonville, is a senior at Castle High School.

“I am very proud of Jacob and these bright young students for being a part of such a great program in the Civil Air Patrol,” said Rep. Crouch. “The program is an excellent resource that builds character, enthusiasm and excellence in our children. I also want to thank them for serving as Pages at the Statehouse for a day. It is important that our kids take the opportunity to see the state government at work up close. It is always a pleasure to meet Pages from my district.”

Pages are able to see how the state legislature works firsthand in a behind-the-scenes tour. They are able to work alongside legislators, legislative assistants and interns.

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)-

Castle High School spent most of the day without phone service Monday, after the storm knocked out the lines.

The school corporation made do with cell phones, email and their fax machine, and used their website to make parents aware of the issue.

School officials say, it was inconvenient four to five hours.

Naomi Barr says she calls Castle High School, where her daughter is a Junior, often.

"My daughter is active in show choir, so I don't know, maybe once, twice a week."

Donate used books, CDs, DVDs to benefit sale at Castle

The annual PTO Used Book Sale will be held the first weekend in February. Gather up those gently used books, CDs, and DVDs that are just laying around collecting dust and drop them off under the stairwell next to the office at Castle School.  They will accept:  Fiction, non-fiction, pre-teen and children’s books: Reference materials such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, Bibles, cookbooks, etc.; CDs, DVDs, VHS and cassette tapes.

Byron visits with Oakdale Elementary students

With all of the crazy weather we've had in the last week, it was a perfect opportunity for 14 News meteorologist Byron Douglas to talk with the third graders at Oakdale Elementary in Boonville. 

Third grade teacher Patti Wilbanks invited Byron out to talk about Ben Franklin's contributions to weather and how the seasons work.  The students also enjoyed a storm chasing video and the opportunity to ask questions about weather in southwest Indiana and around the country.
