Air quaility low on Sunday

Air quaility low on Sunday

Although there was no official alert, air pollution was higher than normal in areas of the tri-state on Sunday.

Relatively light winds and a stagnant air mass led to a build-up of particulate matter.  The conditions created very hazy conditions and reached the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category for a while Sunday afternoon.

When air quality is low, you should reduce your exposure to outdoor pollutants, especially if you have medical issues.  Air quality could once again suffer on Monday, although rain moving in by Tuesday will help clean up the skies.

Another breezy day for boating

Another breezy day for boating

If you're planning on taking the boat our for a spin Wednesday, better plan on taking it slow.

For the second day in a row, a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for most of the tri-state.  Sustained winds of 10-20 miles per hour will accompany 20-25+ mile per hour gusts.

Winds become stronger over water as there is little resistance or friction to slow them down.

The National Weather Service, which issues Lake Wind Advisory, warns that small boats will be especially affected by choppy waves and are more prone to capsizing.

Meet the 70 thid graders at Oakdale Elementary School in Boonville. Congratulations to Patty Wilbanks on 42-years of teaching and her recent award.

We talked about the water cycle and how to read the clouds to forecast the weather for the next day. I Illustrated with some story chasing video along with convective clouds pics.

Also, jet tails will help forecast the weather for the next 24-36 hours. Sure...we have computer models but the clouds will help foretell the upcoming weather.

Warrick County sees plenty of rain; better weather on the way

Warrick County sees plenty of rain; better weather on the way

It's been non-stop clouds and a lot of rain since Friday night.  Byron Douglas says Warrick County leads the Tri-State in rainfall so far with 2.5" recorded in Lynnville and 2.1" in Newburgh.

It's another cloudy, cooler day today with highs expected in the mid-60s and some light rain possible.

Warmer weather returns for Tuesday and the remainder of the week… and less rainy too.  We’ll have temperatures in the 70s for the rest of this week with a slight cool down by next Sunday.

Jeff updates expected rainfall; weekend forecast

14 News Chief Meteorologist Jeff Lyons says a cold front to our west will bring widespread moderate to heavy rainfall over the weekend.  Showers and a few imbedded thunderstorms will move into the Tri-State before midnight and will continue through Saturday and Sunday.

Total rainfall of 2-3" appears likely, and this may cause some localized flooding and also prolong flooding conditions along the Wabash and Little Wabash Rivers.

Byron Visits Yankeetown Elementary

Meet all the first graders at Yankeetown Elementary. They are coming off career week and I was lucky enough to introduce the students to meteorology.

We took the classroom outside because the clouds were telling the weather story.  I showed the students how to observe the sky... like a detective ....and then design a forecast for that afternoon and the next day.

A cool class visit...because the skies started out sunny...but towering cumulus clouds developed and even squeezed out a little rain.

Slight risk for severe thunderstorms

Slight risk for severe thunderstorms

Warmest days of the year so far this year about to be slammed by a potent cold front.

Temps surged into the lower 80s this week and will be near a record high this afternoon.

Thunderstorms will hold off until later tonight and end early on Thursday.  We are still under a slight risk for severe storms, meaning several storms could be packed with large hail...damaging winds with a chance of isolated tornadoes.  In the wake of the front, temps will sink into the mid 50s Friday afternoon.

BE ALERT for severe storms later tonight through early Thursday.
