Warmer weather... and allergies on the way

Warmer weather... and allergies on the way

Record cold temperatures below freezing have kept tree pollen from getting too bad so far.  But that's about to change.

Temperatures in the 60s and 70s this weekend and into next week should kick trees into overdrive producing pollen-inducing allergies.

By this time last year, most trees had already blossomed, but our very chilly start to the year has lasted into early spring, meaning all those trees, lawns and flowers and bursting to get going.

Keep your Kleenex handy.

Wednesday morning was a beautiful sight in the Tri-State as a full moon came into view.  Eric E Vinson of Newburgh sent this pic of the eerie moon through some trees.

According to earthsky.org, this is the first full moon of springtime which is called the Pink Moon, to celebrate the return of certain wild flowers. Other names are Egg Moon, Sprouting Grass Moon, or Easter Moon.

State Climate Office: Rain 'recharging' farm soil

State Climate Office: Rain 'recharging' farm soil

A week of rain and unseasonable warmth in January replenished the ground with enough water to eliminate dry conditions across Indiana except for the far northern part of the state.

The report by the State Climate Office, based at Purdue University, is good news for crop farmers, who rely on rain and snow over the winter to "recharge" soils with water needed for spring plantings.

"We can't overemphasize the significance of this recharge in creating the much-needed reserves of soil moisture that can help alleviate the impacts of dry conditions if we start getting that around planting time," said Dev Niyogi, state climatologist. "While the general outlook is for normal rains in coming months, our recent experience guides us to think the threat of drought again is just round the corner and not off the mind or landscape. These rains and snow events are critical."

Winter weather advisory

Winter weather advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the southern counties of Illinois and southwest Indiana.

These counties could see ice developing in the early hours of the event today with a chance for 1 to 2 inches of accumulated snow, followed by another opportunity for sleet and freezing rain as the system moves out of the area.

There is a chance some of this winter precipitation will spill over into other Western Kentucky Counties, particularly those along the Ohio River and those specifically listed in the advisory.

INDOT urges Warrick County drivers to prepare for first significant snow

The Indiana Department of Transportation is focusing attention on what is likely the first statewide winter storm of the season, and is asking motorists to do the same.

INDOT’s salt domes and barns are stocked and ready, but motorists will need to dust off winter driving habits following last year’s mild winter. Motorists are asked to promote their own safety and that of others by reducing their speed according to road conditions and increasing the distance between themselves and other vehicles, especially INDOT’s yellow plow trucks.
